Sensors and remote support

A sensor can turn on a hallway light, send a "good morning" notice to one person, or chime when someone stands up. Used well, sensors respond to the home, not to the person, and the person decides where they go.

What to look for

  • What it senses: movement, presence in a room, or weight on a chair.
  • Whether it has a camera. Many don't.
  • Whether an alert stays in the room or goes to someone's phone.
  • Required hubs or Wi-Fi, and any optional plans.

Questions to ask first

  • Has the person said yes, and chosen which rooms, if any?
  • Who gets a notice, and when?
  • What happens if Wi-Fi goes down?

Questions people ask

Can home sensors work without a camera?

Yes. Many use motion or radar and have no camera.

Do motion sensors need a hub?

Some do. The listing price includes or names any required hub.

How do you use sensors respectfully?

Ask the person first, let them choose which rooms have a sensor, and agree together on who gets any notice.
