Switch, eye gaze and computer access

Some people use a phone, tablet or computer by pressing a switch, moving their head, or looking at the screen. These tools make that possible.

What to look for

  • What the person can move reliably: a hand, the head, the eyes.
  • Whether the switch connects directly or needs an interface.
  • Which devices it works with, and which connector.
  • Who will set up scanning or dwell clicking.

Questions to ask first

  • Has an assistive technology specialist helped the person try options?
  • Does it work with the switch access built into their device?
  • What else needs to be bought to make it work?

Good to know

Some eye trackers sold for gaming are not assistive devices and don't work with the computer's eye control features. Check that a product is made for access.

A way to control a phone, tablet or computer by pressing one or two switches instead of touching the screen.

Do I need an interface to use a switch with an iPad?

Can a gaming eye tracker be used for computer access?
